Commercials and Cool Music

You may have heard a lot about indie bands selling their music to big corporations and then hearing that cool music on commercials. Some that come to mind quickly are Wilco selling to Volkswagen(much earlier this year), of Montreal to T-mobile, and that infamous Band of Horses Selling to Wal-Mart. I bring this up because I was watching T.V. last night when I heard a familiar song on Target's commercial. It was the Go! Team's, "We Just Won't Be Defeated." Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes recently wrote an essay that was posted over at stereogum, about the impossibility of NOT selling out. You could check it out, it's filled with expletives and comes of a little defensive, but makes some valid points. Amen.

My Misunderstanding Mind

Well if you read the last post, I am sorry. Basically I didn't understand what was happening, and I too, was disappointed to see the rerun of SNL last night. So it turns out that Michael Cera DID host a special "On Strike!" Saturday Night Live, but there were no camera's. Instead, more of a "stage" version was held in Chelsea New York. I misread, and I apologize. Here are a couple SNL videos for the fix of funny we are all in need of.

Need Your Fix?

The Writer's Guild of America is still on strike but luckily, as pitchfork reports, Saturday Night Live will be airing a special, "On Strike!" episode. Whether this defeats the point of going on strike or not, I couldn't tell you. All I can say is that I am happy about it. Reportedly, all proceeds go to the shows production staff. Hosting this episode is the HILARIOUS Michale Cera (Arrested Development, Superbad, and the upcoming Juno,) and the musical guest is none other than Yo La Tengo. I think this will be good.

The Great Sufjan Song Xmas Xchange!

That lovable, multi talented musical genius that is Sufjan Stevens is sending a christmas challenge to the world. Asthmatic Kitty says:

"It's Christmas time again! That means tightly bundled scarves, lively debates on the merits of real/plastic trees, a litany of Christmas television specials, and finding the perfect retro Christmas wrapping paper.

And gifts of course! Who could forget the gifts!

That's why Sufjan Stevens is busy working on a very special gift right now, for a very special person. And in the spirit of Christmas, that person will give Sufjan a similarly special gift.

Here's how it works: write an original Christmas song, record it, and email the song to us. Asthmatic Kitty will pick a winner, and that person will trade rights to their song for rights to Sufjan's song.

Just like a gift exhange, Sufjan's song becomes your song. You can hoard it for yourself, sell it to a major soft drink corporation, use it in your daughter's first Christmas video, or share it for free on your website. No one except Sufjan and you will hear his song, unless you decide otherwise. You get the song and all legal rights to it. We get the same rights to your song."

So, get working on those songs kids. If you win and decide not to sell it, I will totally post it on this blog, and then people will actually come to this site. Also, you can stream Sufjan's entire "Songs for Christmas" box set and submit your song here.

A new Tegan & Sara track remixed by Tiësto. Pretty ill. Not the highest quality stream but still good. Listen to it and learn more over at Stereogum.

Sigur Rós Update

Well, if you live anywhere else but North America you would already have access to Sigur Rós' newest Film/Album double release, heima/hvarf-heim. But if you are like me and you DO live in North America, then you have to wait. You only have to wait until tomorrow to purchase the CD, but as for the film, you have to wait until November 20th. How can I be expected to be patient under such circumstances?

Hold Steady's New Stuff

There's word from Gum that the Hold Steady have been performing some new songs at their shows, three to be exact, and their favorite is called, "Lord I'm Discouraged." A beauty of a rock ballad, I am thinking maybe a good candidate for Guitar Hero 4. This clip of them performing it was taken in Columbus Ohio on October 27.

Panda Bear Skateboarding

This isn't the newest kid on the block, but it is still relatively fresh. Panda Bear's newish video for their song "Comfy in Nautica" is simply a skateboarding video. But the skateboarder comes out of the ocean. Very cool. Sorry if I got your hopes up with the title.
