President Carter is No More

Jay-Z, otherwise known as Shawn Carter, stepped down from his position as the president of Def Jam records. Jay-Z had this to say:
“Now it’s time for me to take on new challenges. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy.”

You may be asking yourself, "What will Jay-Z do with all his free time now?" Well, he is a part owner of the New Jersey Nets, and his girlfriend is Beyonce. That should keep him busy.
Variety wraps it up here.

More Christmas Downloads!

Sounds Familyre has a christmas album up for free download that includes the track "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" performed by none other than Sufjan Stevens. Click one of the many links in this post to be magically transported to where the music is at.

MTV vs. MIA

M.I.A. released a video for her song, "Paper Planes" and some controversy has risen. MTV's edited version of the video edited out the gunshots from the background that you would normally hear during the chorus. CBS edited out the sounds when she performed on Letterman awhile ago. But anyways, here is the video, gunshots and all.

Bjork + Michael Gondry= Yussssssss.

Michael Gondry and Bjork have teamed up, for the seventh time in her career, to kick your butt with a new video. Most of the videos they have made together ar visually and audio-ly(?) overwhelming, and this newest video is no exeption. I'm sorry i can't post the video right now, but i'm at school, and youtube is blocked, so i will when i get home. You will love it, i promise. For now, enjoy these crazy pictures of Bjork herself.

I Want Your Input

So a lot of lists are coming out about the best albums of the year. I am not going to try and act like I have listened to all the albums that have been released this year. I want anyone who reads this (all three of you) to utilize the comment feature of blogger and tell me about YOUR favorite albums that have been released this year. Thank you very much.

Hey guys. It's Chantel. I haven't been writing a lot lately, and i feel bad that Sam is doing all the work, so i'm going to post more blogs and stuff. I thought i would start out with just postaing some cool performances i have found. These first 2 ar The Arcade Fire.

This is them performaing "Wake Up" with David Bowie

This is them performing "Neon Bible" in an elevator.

Yes, I am quite the Gangster.

I figured it was about time I threw some hip-hop your way in case you didn't realize that I am a total beat basher. Anyways, this is a new video from Kid Sister. The song's called "Pro Nails," and you might recognize a certain hip-hop artist named Kanye West. You gotta love finger dancing. SWITCHBOARD! Enjoi Boi.

Commercials and Cool Music

You may have heard a lot about indie bands selling their music to big corporations and then hearing that cool music on commercials. Some that come to mind quickly are Wilco selling to Volkswagen(much earlier this year), of Montreal to T-mobile, and that infamous Band of Horses Selling to Wal-Mart. I bring this up because I was watching T.V. last night when I heard a familiar song on Target's commercial. It was the Go! Team's, "We Just Won't Be Defeated." Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes recently wrote an essay that was posted over at stereogum, about the impossibility of NOT selling out. You could check it out, it's filled with expletives and comes of a little defensive, but makes some valid points. Amen.

My Misunderstanding Mind

Well if you read the last post, I am sorry. Basically I didn't understand what was happening, and I too, was disappointed to see the rerun of SNL last night. So it turns out that Michael Cera DID host a special "On Strike!" Saturday Night Live, but there were no camera's. Instead, more of a "stage" version was held in Chelsea New York. I misread, and I apologize. Here are a couple SNL videos for the fix of funny we are all in need of.

Need Your Fix?

The Writer's Guild of America is still on strike but luckily, as pitchfork reports, Saturday Night Live will be airing a special, "On Strike!" episode. Whether this defeats the point of going on strike or not, I couldn't tell you. All I can say is that I am happy about it. Reportedly, all proceeds go to the shows production staff. Hosting this episode is the HILARIOUS Michale Cera (Arrested Development, Superbad, and the upcoming Juno,) and the musical guest is none other than Yo La Tengo. I think this will be good.

The Great Sufjan Song Xmas Xchange!

That lovable, multi talented musical genius that is Sufjan Stevens is sending a christmas challenge to the world. Asthmatic Kitty says:

"It's Christmas time again! That means tightly bundled scarves, lively debates on the merits of real/plastic trees, a litany of Christmas television specials, and finding the perfect retro Christmas wrapping paper.

And gifts of course! Who could forget the gifts!

That's why Sufjan Stevens is busy working on a very special gift right now, for a very special person. And in the spirit of Christmas, that person will give Sufjan a similarly special gift.

Here's how it works: write an original Christmas song, record it, and email the song to us. Asthmatic Kitty will pick a winner, and that person will trade rights to their song for rights to Sufjan's song.

Just like a gift exhange, Sufjan's song becomes your song. You can hoard it for yourself, sell it to a major soft drink corporation, use it in your daughter's first Christmas video, or share it for free on your website. No one except Sufjan and you will hear his song, unless you decide otherwise. You get the song and all legal rights to it. We get the same rights to your song."

So, get working on those songs kids. If you win and decide not to sell it, I will totally post it on this blog, and then people will actually come to this site. Also, you can stream Sufjan's entire "Songs for Christmas" box set and submit your song here.

Sigur Rós Update

Well, if you live anywhere else but North America you would already have access to Sigur Rós' newest Film/Album double release, heima/hvarf-heim. But if you are like me and you DO live in North America, then you have to wait. You only have to wait until tomorrow to purchase the CD, but as for the film, you have to wait until November 20th. How can I be expected to be patient under such circumstances?

Hold Steady's New Stuff

There's word from Gum that the Hold Steady have been performing some new songs at their shows, three to be exact, and their favorite is called, "Lord I'm Discouraged." A beauty of a rock ballad, I am thinking maybe a good candidate for Guitar Hero 4. This clip of them performing it was taken in Columbus Ohio on October 27.

Panda Bear Skateboarding

This isn't the newest kid on the block, but it is still relatively fresh. Panda Bear's newish video for their song "Comfy in Nautica" is simply a skateboarding video. But the skateboarder comes out of the ocean. Very cool. Sorry if I got your hopes up with the title.

Icelandic Awesomeness

I think I talk about this too much. Spinner lets loose a new video clip from Sigur Rós' upcoming film, Heima. In this clip, the band is performing the song, "Gitardjamm."

Paste Wishes it was as Cool as Radiohead

Well Radiohead started this wildness with their name your own price for their album back at the beginning of the month, and now Paste Magazine wants some of the action. Name your own price for a one year subscription to the music/film/scenester party magazine. So, if you want it, just go to their website, and find one of the many links to subscribe.

Another Installment of Cheerleader! Rock

One of my favorite bands has a new video for their song, "The Wrath of Marice." The Go! Team is an awesome band that makes me feel oh so happy, and occasionally accompanies me while running. I say occasionally because I don't do a lot of running.

Just another day at the office...

Apostle of Hustle's new video for the song, "Cheap Like Sebastian" is here and it is ready for the watching. The song comes from their National Anthem of Nowhere album. It features front man Andrew Whiteman walking through a peculiar office. You might recognize him as part of the band, Broken Social Scene. I rather enjoy the scene of the priest in the strobe light.

Another Video?!

Yes, another new video, and this one brings back memories of my wonderful childhood. As I watch Bloc Party's new video for their song, "Flux," I think back to the days of pajamas, cereal, and the Power Rangers on saturday mornings. Here you go.

I have spoken before concerning Sigur Rós' film Heima which we now know they will be releasing with their next album, "Hvarf-Heim." The film and album are set to be released this November 5th. They are now streaming four of the tracks from said Hvarf-Heim album on their Myspace page.

Daft Punk's next album, "Alive" is set to come out on November 20th (I think Chantel mentioned this?) You can listen to a cut from it, called Too Long/Steam Machine on their Myspace page.

Are you up to date on the latest band secret message? There have been quite a few as of late, the last one being the Arcade Fire's, Bonlineb, october 6th, neon bible video, thing. No? click here. Well now we get something from the White Stripes. A question mark, a quote from photographer Man Ray, and some roman numerals is what the posted on their websites news section and on their myspace blog. But if you look around the site you will find a matching question mark that will take you here. Cameras. They are selling cameras from Lomography. Want to know more about Lomography? The night that changed my life.

On Wednesday Me, Samuel, and Keeton loaded into the lesbian car and headed for Thanksgiving point. After waiting in line and setting our blanket up, James Murphey and LCD Soundsystem took the stage, and the party began. Samuel and Keeton were squares, and stood in the back. But I, being the party animal (hah) went up the front to dance with people i had never met, which i did quite a lot of. If you think LCD is good on cd, you HAVE to see them live. It's literally amazing. If anything was ever amazing, it was them, live. After they blew my mind, and a man i never met before told me he was in love with me, we waited for The Arcade Fire to take the stage. WHen they DID finally take the stage, it was the best hour of my life.Arcade Fire's music is so much more powerful when they play it live. Every member of the band played a different instrument every song, and sometimes they would just walk around the stage and pick up an instrument nobody was playing.

Now, i am in Seattle, indie music capital of the world, and i can't wait.

Still Creating Friend Opportunities

Like Deerhoof? Well you can go and download a completely free mp3 album here. Don't you love it when bands don't make you download illegally? I do. In other news, the Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem tour kicked off yesterday. One week from tomorrow friends. One week. Hopefully I will blog more often. Maybe if I can get a break from school.

White Stipes anyone? Too bad

Do you like the White Stripes? Did you buy tickets for their shows? Well I am sorry to inform you of the cancellation of not only the Utah show, but all 19 of the U.S. dates. "Why is this happening?" you may be asking yourself, well according to a statement put out by the band, "The White Stripes announced today that they are canceling their forthcoming tour due to health issues. Meg White is suffering from acute anxiety and is unable to travel at this time."

They apologize for any inconvenience. Take your ticket back to where ever you bought it for a refund. Meg looks horrible in that picture.

I'm gonna punch Sam in his glasses, oh no.

Only joking kids. I could never do that. That's worse than like....stealing cookies.

On September 10 i went to Modest Mouse & Rilo Kiley at The Mckay Events Center. I have but a few things to say.
1.Even if you have never heard Modest Mouse, you will love them after seeing them live.
2.Seats suck.
3.Jenny Lewis GLOWS. She glows.
4.I didn't understand a thing the lead singer of MM said. At all.

Alright, anyway, the concert was amazing, and like i said, Modest mouse is so great live. It seemed like every song, the front members of the band were all playing different instruments. Keyboard, cello, guitar, banjo, harpsicord(?), pretty much whatever you can think of. So, if Modest Mouse comes to a city near you, get there.

Monday, September 10, 2007

I just gotta get myself over me.

Saturday morning, i awoke bright and early so that i would drive to Lehi NOT on the freeway. This took me about 40, but it was worth it. Jamboree Music Festival was on Saturday, and my groupd was the second one there. Even though we arrived about 3 1/2 hours before they opened the gate, it was ok. Wheh the gates FINALLY opened (1 hour late), me and the gang went to will call, claimed out guest list tickets, and headed over to the stage, where Love You Long Time was doing soundcheck. They were, of course the reason we got in for free, and so we had to show our support for them, by being in the front row and rocking it out. After Love You Long Time, a few bands i didn't really know played, and then there were The Aquabats. OH the Aquabats. They were amazing, as always, re-naming thanksgiving point "High Five City", fighting with the pilgrams, having sea horse races, that sort of thing. Later that night, The Format and Toad The Wet Sprocket played. They were amazing as well. I also managed to ocnvert my best friend, Tejan, into a Format lover, and we got to meet Nate afte they played!
It was realy super great, and when i get home i will put up a picture of me and Tejan with Nate.

I went my way (now I am coming back)

It's been a while because school has been rough. But I will try to do better. Right now, I am telling you about the new video for that Mark Ronson remix of Bob Dylan's, "Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I'll Go Mine)." If you haven't heard the remix than thats a real shame. But here's the video for it.

I found True Romance

She Wants revenge has FINALLY come out with a new single. It has been entirely too long. True Romance, is what it is called, from their new c.d., titled This Is Forever, judging from this track, the c.d. promises to be as good as the last.

Here is a video of theirs, it's not the new single, but Shirly Manson is in it, that's cool.

Icelandic Spectacular

Sigur Rós is making their first film, and it's called Heima. It is a movie about the tour of their homeland, Iceland. With the beautiful Icelandic landscapes, and Sigur Rós' spectacularly entrancing ambient rock, I think this will be a very good thing. The DVD will come with a CD when it is released later this fall. You can watch the trailer below, or, if you want it in a higher resolution, you can find it here.

Also, Sigur Rós has two songs that are going to be on Leonardo DiCaprio's new film, "The Eleventh Hour."

The Perfect Crime

The Decemberists recently announced their release of The Perfect Crime #2 EP. It features remixes by Diplo, A Touch of Class, and Junior Boys, as well as some others. Here is a new music video for all you Spooners out there. "Don't You Evah" is Spoon's latest video from their newest album, "GA GA GA GA GA." It features a dancing Keepon (dancing robot creature created by Hideki Kozima) and features cameo appearances by Spoon's Front man and drummer. Can you find them?

Three days?!?!?

Sorry it has been so long since either me or Samuel updated this baby. Samuel has....disappeared? I don't know. I have a job now, so im busy but, i do have something of interest.
I just learned a while ago that Daft Punk made a movie! I am not really sure what it's about, but Daft Punk is incredible, (pretty much the best that i know of) and so i have decided to put up my favorite snipet of it. Sone of you may know this song from the youtube video "Daft Hands". Ill, eh? Well, here it is. And if anyone finds the whole movie, tell me where, because i WANT to see it.

Also, if you didn't go to the Love You Long Time show tonight you missed out. I saved the lead singer of Ivy League from falling to his death.

Don't even try to tell me that it isnt going to be the most EPIC conert of Thanksgiving Point's time.Come one,LCD=Arcade Fire?Yeah. Well, you know your 2 favorite music bloggers are going to be there and are going to write aaaaall about it as soon as our dancing muscles stop aching.

This is the best day of my life.

School approaches abruptly, and summer draws to an end. So I needed some new clothes. Or, used clothes, rather. I bought some pants, a jacket and some cool shoes, (Ben Sherman's Cheetah Action.). Also, the Season Finale of Hell's Kitchen was on tonight and Rock won. Now for the BIG NEWS. Drum roll please, ARCADE FIRE AND LCD SOUNDSYSTEM ARE COMING TO LEHI! I know it makes you want to cry with joy. I already did. September 26. The day before my birthday. Be there, or, give me more room to dance.

I don't really watch this show. I promise.

While surfing the internet I came across a rather interesting piece on stereogum. So You Think You Can Dance, a popular show which I don't really watch, had something cool on it. Lacey and Pasha, danced to "In The Morning" by Junior Boys. Such a good song. Such an interesting dance. fast forward to :50 in if you don't want to watch the whole thing.

They tried to make her go to rehab... and she went.

Sources say that Amy Winehouse overdosed on Wednesday morning. The people talking for her claim it was "Sever Exhaustion" but people close to Ms. Winehouse don't beleive it. She checked into Priory rehab centre in London on Wednesday. Mirror.co.uk reports that one friend said: "It's not an exaggeration to say that unless she sorts herself out, this relentless dalliance with drink and drugs will only have one ending. And it won't be happy. It's time for some tough love which is why we've taken her to get help." Read more from the online newspaper here. That just goes to teach you kids, never mix drugs, booze, and big hair.

"Do you think i dress too provocativley?"

HBO has busted out a lot of good shows. None really coem to mind...uh...but,you know. Whatever. One that IS really great is Flight Of The Conchords. It is about a band, called Flight Of The Conchords, consisting of Bret and Jemain. They are from New Zealand and live in New York City. You may be asking, Chantel, this is a music blog. Why are you talking about a t.v. show? Well, because it is a musical! Yes.Thats right. A music. For example, Bret and Jemain are being mugged, and they proceed to rap using their hip-hop names Hiphopopotamus and Rhymenocerous. If you think THAT sounds good, you need to see the show. Every episode they feature 2 or 3 songs, and every episode crack me up. They have used such songs as:
Alby The Racist Dragon
Whats Wrong With The World Today?
Buisness Time
The Tape Of Love
The Prettiest Girl In The Whole Wide Room
Bret,You Got It Going On
And many more.....
If you enjoy laughing, music, and New Zealand accents, this is the t.v. show for you.

Plus, tonight, i threatened to kick Sam off the blogs. he best watch his 'tude yo. Actually,i bet nobody would read this blog if Samuel didn't contribute.

We agreed this had to be done.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! (a favorite band of me and Glars...er, i mean Samuels) has made a c.d., self titled, and we have both agreed that it is one of the best we own. Recently, we were over at a friends house and we found a video for one of our favorite song by CYHSY! called Is This Love. It's soooo frekin rad.

The video involves 2 vaccums, falling in love, doing something else with love (making it.Heh.), and then....well, you will just have to see what happens. But it gets me every time. Unfortunatley, something was wrong with the code and i could'nt put it on the page, but i put a link to it right down there. See it? You should watch it, I am sure you will love it. Enjoy.

See the video here!

Jack White, Married?

Ok, I didn't even know Jack White was married, much less did I know that he and his SUPERMODEL wife, Karen Elson, just celebrated the birth of their second child. The new baby boy was named Henry Lee. Their first child was a girl named Scarlett, and is now 15 months old. Jack White married a supermodel, what a rock star. Thanks to Indieblogheaven.

BE a PUNK.

Gee,its early. I have been up looking at Myspaces and watching family guys, and i have been thinking: why do people who listen to certain kinds of music dress certain ways? Why do people who like the Sex Pistols stereotypically wear tight pants? Why do people who worship Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins like floral prints?

After watching Stewie Griffin beat his babysitter boyfriend with a tire iron,i finally realized that you dress the way you feel, and if you listen to a lot of folk music, you will dress like....folks. If you listen to rapscallions who wear ripped clothing, you're seafood. Haha. If anyone gets that joke you need to get some sleep. Anyway, word play aside, what it comes down to is how you want to represent yourself and how you want to express how you feel. THAT,children, is why i don't believe in labels. You can't put 2 people, even though they might listen to the same music and have the same friends, in the same category. They are different. So, BE a punk! Be different than all of your friends! Dress crazy, listen to amazing music! Be Yourself!!!

So, at this point im not really sure what i am talking about. Goodnight, sleep tigh, and dont let those friggin bed bugs bite!

Celebrity in our Midst.

Cirque Lodge is one of the top drug rehab clinics in the country, and is right up the canyon from beautiful Orem! At Robert Redford's Sundance resort, Lindsay Lohan now resides. To read more, check out MSNBC's take on the story.

James Murphy is the Ben Gibbard of "funk punk"

Yeah. I said it. Did you even KNOW there was a Ben Gibbard of funk punk? I didnt either until a few minutes ago. Alas, here he is, fronting the band LCD Soundsystem.

Lets start with Benny boy. ben Gibbard is involved in such projects as Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service, and he is currently on a solo tour. Anyone who knows me also knows that i love Ben Gibbard and hail him as one of the best writers i know of.GOSH.(Sorry,i felt the need to throw that in.) Anyway, hes amazing. Now, we move onto Sir James. James has big glasses, hes a bit on the chubby side, he has a pretty average voice, but he is an awesome writer. The songs he writes make you want to party, cry, and pretty much everything inbetween. From the radical "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" about, well, Daft Punk playing at his house, to the slower "Someone Great", about a premature birth, everything he writes says just what he wants it to say,and it makes you feel just how he feels.

Alright. There we go, now, if you have never heard of either of these gentlemen, i suggest you click on their names. Yeah? Yeah.

Festival-less

Around this time every summer I get a little annoyed due to the lack of good music festivals in or around Utah. I go through the blogs and hear about how great Lollapalooza, or Pitchfork Music Festival, or even the Virgin Festival was. The closest, semi-large, festival is Monolith! at Red Rocks (or their myspace). Besides that all I can do is go to the free Twilight Concert Series. Maybe I am just completely daft and don't know what is going on in Utah, but the only Music festival I have ever heard of being here is Synthstock and I am pretty sure that hasn't been held since 2000. If anyone actually reads this and can help a brother out, I would appreciate it. And did you hear about LCD Soundsystem and The Arcade Fire touring? What an amazing show that would be! And they just added two more dates! But alas, they have no plans on entertaining the masses who reside in Utah.
